Every year, as soon as it hits midnight on 31st December, most of the cities around the world light up with
fireworks of different sparkles and colors to welcome the new year. Unfortunately, this moment of
celebration for people can be the result of many bird’s fear, confusion, injury and even death.
Fireworks are not only colorful displays rather it has loud explosions and bright flashes. As birds rely on
familiar sound and visual cures to navigate, sudden racket of fireworks trigger havoc in their fight. Not
only that, birds roosting at night get overwhelmed as the sky explodes with light, sound and smoke .This
led them taking flight for safety in darkness leading to collisions with buildings, trees, wires and many
more. Moreover some of them lose their route or companion birds entirely.

So should we call an end to fireworks as a celebration for the new year? No, it will remain as a cherished
part of New Year’s Eve traditions. Then, what about the birds? With growing awareness, communities are
coming up with alternative and animal friendly festivity. Here are some initiatives, coordinated display in
designated areas, laser/light show and proper enforcement of regulations.
We greet the new year with hope and celebration. Yet, a reminder that while we cheer with noise and
spectacle, their fears and suffering goes unheard.
